Benefits of eating seasonal produce:

1. Less Expensive: When farmers are harvesting a large amount of produce because the crop is in season, the cost of production goes down dramatically. Moreover, when the produce is locally sourced, the traveling and storage expenses are negligible, thereby reducing the cost of the product itself for the consumer. On the other hand, when we find produce that is out of season, it’s usually sourced from a location with different climate or has been stored for a long time, there by increasing the price of the product for the consumer.

2. More Fresh: Seasonal produce is more likely to be fresher, and higher in nutritional value as some antioxidants such as Vitamin C, folate and carotenes will rapidly decline when stored for long periods of time. Some fruits and vegetables that have been stored for long periods of time can also have a reduction in phyto-nutrient content.

3. Environmentally-Friendly: Eating seasonal produce bring down the demand for out of season produce, which further supports local farmers, and reduces transportation and refrigeration of produce, which in turn is healthy for the environment.
